FeastByFist app has already been developed and launched in 2020. However, two years later, it didn't get too many users engaged in the app because of having a lack of intuitive user experience. I was in charge of revamping the product with end-to-end solutions. From colour system to overall user experience.



The co-founder has a great enthusiasm for letting more people understand losing weight was always not a rush & temporary mission. Instead, it’s a long-lasting lifestyle and mind growing journey. That’s why he came out with this idea and dedicate himself to creating a product that can help people who are suffering from diet issues retake their body autonomy and live a body-mind balanced life.


Since most applications on the market use calculated calories to control food portions, the process is likely mundane and dull. That may let users lack the perseverance to keep following the diet guideline along the way. Therefore, this utterly new and fresh idea for controlling food portions could prompt users to do it, rather than seeing only numerical data all the time. People can get a wholesome balance when consuming food without exceeding 12 fists a day. FeastByFist wants to help users listen to their bodily rhythms of fullness and hunger while enjoying all of their favourite foods.


Current Experience

  1. Take a photo of your meal: As the user takes a photo of food with the camera, the screen will show up the circle accordingly that is calculated through patent-pending AR technology.

  2. Reveal the portion size: The camera will show a precise portion size. The user can switch the indicator to either to circle or fist.

  3. Choose sizes: Once the app has detected the surfaces, you can manipulate the size to cover the food you want to record.

  4. Choose food types: There’re four types of categories you can save separately.

  5. Statistics: After saving the photo, the dashboard will display data that includes different values and how much users have eaten.

  6. Meals gallery: Every photo will be collected in the Gallery page by latest time order, which shows the amounts of the fist in each photo.

7. Progress page(Daily): This page shows the total number of fist and different food categories in a day with bar chart graphs.

8. Progress page: (Comparison): The user can switch to see the comparisons from one date to another.

9. Profile page: User can access profile page from Setting page.

10. Free trial business model: The app allows users to use all features for 14 days. After the trial expired, users need to subscribe monthly or yearly. If not, they couldn’t save the photo after taking the photo.



  • People have no idea what the circle means when they take a photo for the first time. (Unclear goal)

  • Users don't understand why do they have to choose a different size for the circle. (Unclear goal)

  • When turning the circle indicator into the fist shape, it hardly sees the shape. (Deficient UI visibility)

  • The empty state was designed to show the sample, yet may confuse users whether the data is from them or not. (Users feel a lack of control)

  • Colours were applied in the application without consistency and meaning. (No consistency & standard)

  • Layers show a lack of hierarchy. (Didn't prioritize components)

  • Using emoji without text may not have enough clarity. (Deficient UI visibility)

  • The subscription page has no adequate information to specify the difference between a free trial and a subscription. (Cause confusions)

  • Information wasn’t arranged in an aesthetic way to capture users’ eyes. (No enough attraction)

User Research

Contextual Inquiry

In order to find out more insights from the real users, I conducted three contextual inquiries, each followed by me as an interviewer at the participant's home. Two of them were office workers, and another one was a postgraduate student from SoU. This method focuses on observing the real-time behaviours of users in their natural place, thus they will unwind their moods. Also, without setting any scenarios and tasks, participants interacted with the product by following their own paths.


“Not exactly get the real concept.”

” I can’t find a reason to keep using this since I don’t know how this will help me to lose my weight.”

”How do I know how much I could eat in a day?”

”What're the advantages compared to calories calculating?”

”Why use FIST?”

”Why I couldn't save my pictures?”

”Interface was comfused and cluttered.”


What I found after finishing the contextual inquiries was that most of them didn’t understand why they need to calculate with the fist’s size even though they knew that was all about portion. Furthermore, they questioned why they need to reckon the portion through the application if they can reckon it by their “own fist”. These practical opinions made me think wider and put myself in other shoes.

USP Analysis

  • Streamline - No need to Input any complex Information manually.

  • User’s Storytelling - Show personal progress with a spiritual or empathetic way.

  • Arouse Incentive - Visualize plain numbers, circle indicator encourage user to complete the Goal.


Goal Setting

As far as my client is concerned, the business value of this application was also a crucial point I have to consider. I initiated a few meetings with my client and led the discussion subject to the achievable realm. By asking them questions from the core value to the market analysis, I got a more firm precondition from the business point of view. Therefore, I could start to manage my work by aligning with their goal simultaneously. I finalised what advantage they have, and what target audience should be assigned and took the specific market as a benchmark along the way.

Potential market

Referring to the statistical analysis Obesity Rates by Country 2022 by World Population Review shows the obesity rate in the United State was up to 36.2, ranked 14th in the world. There has a great part of the reason for the unbalanced diet culture in the state. In this sense, people need a more accessible and simple way to follow. They are not supposed to be trapped in the calories hurdle anymore.


People have a simpler way to efficiently control their diet. Generalist applications for everyday domains.

Main Audience

Obese folks who want to change their body or life in the United State.

Pages Structure

After I have listed those solutions, I also framed out the structure from all pages that need to be revised. From the original structure, they’ve put “Setting” in one of the tab bars, which may distract the user when they need to explore the real features. Moreover, “Profile” was only put in the dashboard, which didn’t give users enough access to enter the profile page. Apart from rearranging the order from tab bar, I put profile entrance in every page thus users can enter the page anytimes.




Experience Mapping

In this stage, I scoped out the broad users rather than specific audience. Because I want to focus on the people who were familiar with the other diet applications already. The biggest concern was how we prompt them to change the tool that they used to use it.



After I had laid down the groundwork of the project, I started making the skeletons and flows of the application. In addition, when I explain to my client with visual representation, they will get a further understanding.


Sync Up Meetings

However, we only could have communication via video meeting, sometimes it couldn’t resist happening some minor misinterpretations for sure. In this sense, compare to on-site project, I need to pay more patience and time on clarifying the issues.
